Evaluating Cars at a Public Auto Auction

Going to your first public auto auction can be an intimidating experience, but by preparing yourself ahead of time you can make a successful purchase at your first public auto auction.

Make sure you arrive to the public auto auction early. Give yourself as much time as possible to look over any of the cars that you are interested in. By spending some time looking at the auction cars you will be able to spot any potential problems ahead of time and assess whether or not to bid.

Examine the body of the car, look for any repainting of panels or doors. Look for hail damage by seeing the car from different angles in the light. Also look for imperfections where body filler or bondo may have been used. And finally take a look at the tires and rims to asses their condition. Take a look under the hood and see what condition the engine is in. Open the oil cap and look for any creamy white emulsion. Also pull out the dip stick and look for any sludge. Public auction cars usually need some work, so the cost of repairs needs to be considered when placing your bids.

It is not always possible at a public auto auction, but try to take the car for a test drive. A test rack may be available, or you might be able to go for a short drive around the block. Driving the car is absolutely the best way to find problems with the engine, transmission, steering, brakes, and overall workings of the car. Listen to the engine for any strange noises. Pay attention to how the car shifts. Also listen for any other creeks, knocks or sounds coming from the shocks, brakes and steering.

Educating yourself on how to judge a used car's condition will go a long way in helping you at a public auto auction. These simple tips can be applied at any auction and help you feel comfortable in bidding at an auto auction.
