Car Radio Installation Part 5 - Answers To Common Radio Installation Questions

My car doesn't have an ISO connector as standard, is this going to be a problem?

Your new car radio will not always connect directly to your car's standard wiring harness connector. You will need to use a harness adaptor in-between your car's wiring and your new radio's female ISO connector.

The harness adaptor will simply convert your car's wiring into an ISO male that will then enable you to seamlessly connect this by push-fit into the ISO female found on your new car radio's harness. The wiring harnesses will provide the power and the speaker connections to connect to your new radio.

Why will my aerial lead not connect to my new radio?

You may require an aerial adaptor, as some cars such as Vauxhall models use a female socket instead of the conventional male plug. The adaptor simply pushes into your car's female socket and the result is a male plug that fits your new radio. One is included with all new radios.

Some others models need an aerial adaptor because they use an amplified aerial. Basically, the radio feeds the aerial amplifier that is built into the base of the aerial via this adaptor. If you fail to use this adaptor, a poor radio reception could result.

My car has a Steering Wheel Remote Control, can I still use this?

If your car has a factory-fitted steering wheel mounted remote control and you want to use this to control your new radio you will need to fit a steering remote adaptor to keep that capability.

Steering remote adaptors are available to work with many car makes and models in conjunction with Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, Panasonic and Sony radios that have the ability to connect to a stalk control lead. You will have to check with each specific model for compatibility.

Drift Car on a Budget - Part 2, Building a Parts List

So you've found your new car, soon to be drift monster. Now what? Well, now you will need to start the build up. There are several directions you can go and there's no right or wrong. However there is a quick and slow. Now with the direction I'm trying to take you with these tutorials, I'll be teaching you the quick way to get out on the track and to be getting the seat time you will need.

One common misconception about drifting is that you need gobs of power in order to control a drift through a corner, however with my teachings through this tutorial, you will learn this is a myth. What you will need is a tweaked and tuned suspension set up that will make it next to impossible to be unable to control your vehicle through a corner.

So, with that said, let's get started. The first priority is a parts list. You have to know what you need and stick to that list. You don't want to be buying items like steering wheels and glowing shift knobs when you should be looking for polyurethane bushings and sway bars. If you want you drift car to look like a show car then stop right now! Your first drift car will be beat up and probably crashed. So you are looking for form over fashion.

You parts list at this point should be all about suspension. You can have a car producing 150 hp and lbs torque and slide like a pro if you have the proper suspension set up. Therefore your parts list should consist of the following:

- Adjustable coil overs
- Bigger sway bars
- Polyurethane bushings
- Strut bars
- Limited slip differential (LSD)
- SFI 16.1 certified 5/6 point racing harnesses
- Snell SA 2000 or newer helmet

These are some of the essentials to getting on the track. You should be able to find everything on this list for a budget of around 4000 dollars US, putting the running total in the area of $5000.

KEY POINT: Always do your research! During you search for the right parts research the brands and parts you find. Check forums, read articles, and search the web for the pros and cons of the item you want to by. You won't want to be wasting your time and money on things that don't work.

To recap where we are with this budget build, you've found your car, you have your parts list and are buying the things you NEED. With this you are off to a great start and your heading in the right direction. So look forward to part 3 where we will talk about where the rubber meets the road, choosing the proper tire and rim combination

How I Saved $97 on a Brake Job, and You Can Too!

We all hate be taken advantage of, and car repairs are no exception. Now, mechanics aren't the richest bunch, but sporadic lulls and lean economic times tempts them to offer up services you may not need right away. Of course, everything they say is warranted to a degree, but that doesn't mean you need to do it now, nor should you feel pressured into doing it. The end result is what matters. Can you still safely drive your car without endangering yourself or others? Or put it another way, what is the net effect of what I am doing?

Rule 1 - Know your brakes: The other day, I was getting my brakes done. I knew to get them done because on the prior oil change, a mechanic suggested the pads were getting low. I have a front-wheel drive car, which means my brakes degrade more in the front than the rear (approximately 80% in the front and 20% in the rear for my car). So as a result, I have to get the front brakes done 4 to 5 times more often than the back, all things being equal. Brake pads should last 20,000 to 30,000 miles depending on the driver, while I can expect the rear pads to last longer.

As for rotors, they may only need to be changed every 3rd time, especially if the mechanic smoothes down the rotor. I am told that bad rotors will eventually cause the brake pads to crack, which will obligate you to change your brake pads more frequently.

Rule 2 - Know what is out there: Now if you don't know if you need brakes, many leading retailers, like Midas or Meineke will look at them for free. You can use the Yellow Pages, look at your latest coupon mailer for discounts or search on Google Maps for area mechanics. But be warned, they are going to come back with something 99% of the time. And I love this part. They tell you exactly what needs to be done and a couple of other things that may or may not need work all for free. As long as what they say is true, you now have defined the problem and been given a free estimate. Remember, you are just doing research.

Rule 3 - Focus on what needs to be done: You can bet that the mechanic will always find 5 other things too. You shouldn't ignore these other suggestions, but use this opportunity to discuss with the mechanic what needs to be done, why and what the consequences are if you don't do them right away. Keep a small car journal in the glove box so you are well informed next time you need to go, and then you can make a decision when you are ready and have researched the problem. Unless there is an immediate danger, don't be bullied into something you don't want. You can always drive away or call them back.

Rule 4 - Discuss options. Mechanics always have options. If your mechanic is flexible, he will have a selection for you to choose. While he may not mention the bottom three options, you should inquire if he is willing to do them:

- Premium (bells and whistles) - usually for car nuts or neurotics

- Standard or OEMs - parts that are made to measure exactly the specifications of the original part, and usually recommended by most mechanics

- Aftermarket parts - these are the knock offs. Many perform just as well as the OEMs and are cheaper, but usually not mentioned.

- Budget parts - the cheapest of the cheap, and may not last as long.

- Bring your own - If you can find the parts cheaper, sometimes the mechanic will allow you to bring your own, but you can forget any part guarantee.

A second option is labor. Labor can almost always be negotiated; especially if you already (1) are certain what is wrong and (2) can get enough quotes to negotiate. It can be as easy as saying, "This is the exact problem and this other mechanic quoted me this price. Can you do better?"

Rule 5 - The Guarantee: Sure, we all feel safe and secure with a guarantee. But the truth is the parts have the warranty, not the labor. So if you come back and complain, they may charge you for additional labor. I specifically went to Meineke because they will replace the brake pads for life, as long as you keep the receipt. Of course, I will still have to pay for labor. I consider this a good deal on my car for the front brakes. But since my back brakes rarely get changed, this approach may have the same cost benefit over the life of the car, depending on wear and tear.

The best strategy

Step 1: The best strategy is to have an exact handle on what is wrong before you are ready to have you car fixed. As I said, free brake inspections are common and should be taken advantage of. You can always say, "I'm on my lunch break, and need to get back." Obviously, you want to call first to make sure you can easily get in and out.

Step 2: Once you know what's wrong, the mechanic will give you a quote. Ask the mechanic about his opinion on using aftermarket parts, or other options we discussed. Thank him for his time.

Step 3: Call several mechanics and negotiate on parts and labor, since you already now what is exactly wrong. While my trusty Entertainment Book and some mailer coupons yielded some good deals, I usually can find a better deal by calling 5 to 6 mechanics in the area, and then negotiate. Don't forget to ask about what the guarantee covers, and more importantly, what it doesn't.

With a few extra calls totaling 15 extra minutes of my time and a little negotiation, as well as asking for aftermarket parts, I was able to save almost $100 with after market pads and rotors.

Car Parts For the Heart

I have had the same car since 1998. It's a 1995 Toyota that I bought used, and with the help of a friend of mine, we have kept the car in running condition for the past twelve years. That isn't to say that it hasn't had its share of down time, and we have replaced a lot of auto parts over the years, but I am happy to say that it is still running and still serving my family well.

There is a sentimental reason as to why we have kept that car. When my wife and I were dating, I bought that car and we spent a lot of our courtship driving to and from different things together. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I even proposed to her in that car. It's a long story that I won't regale you with at this time, but when I once asked her about selling the car for something newer or in better shape, she got quiet, looked at me, and said "But my life began in that car." I melted, and to this day we still drive our well-worn and well-loved 1995 Toyota Corolla.

So I guess we will have that car for a long time to come. The engine is fantastic, and as long as the transmission holds out we will keep making the necessary repairs. We drove our firstborn home from the hospital in that car, and now I use it to drop him and his sister off at school It seems like the memories will just keep coming.

Auto Parts Can Cost You Big

Auto parts. Something we really don't think much about. We buy our nice shiny new Honda or Jeep or Lexus or whatever and pray that it runs forever with no problems. And then if there is a problem we hope that the repair isn't too expensive and that the parts can be found with relative ease.

Welcome to the REAL world.

Auto parts sales is one of the largest industries in the world. Makes sense since almost everyone in the world has an automobile except maybe in underdeveloped countries. Some auto parts wear out rather quickly such as oil filters. Some last a little longer like brake shoes and pads. And then you have parts that thank goodness don't wear out very often at all like transmissions or cars would be impossible to maintain cost wise.

But there is more to an auto part than just the part itself. The make and model and year of your car will have a great impact on how much the part will cost to replace and how easy the part is to get.

Let us start with ease of obtaining. Obviously newer car parts will be easier to get than older ones. A friend of mine still has a 1975 Pontiac Lemans. To obtain parts for this car he has to literally go to junk yards and even online. No new car dealers keep parts beyond 10 years or so and even auto parts stores limit their inventory to cars under 20 years. A 30 year old vehicle is almost impossible to find parts for. Plus, if you can find the part, depending on where you get it, the cost could be anywhere from 20 to 100% over the original part cost. To say that late model car owners are taken advantage of would be a gross understatement.

But ease of obtaining is not just limited to the age of the car. Vehicles with a limited production are also hard to get parts for, especially if the vehicle is not a big seller. The reason for this is again obvious. Keeping inventory that is not going to be sold is expensive. So auto parts dealers keep limited supplies for these vehicles.

As for the price of auto parts, aside from the age of the vehicle there is the make and model. In this case foreign car parts are much more expensive than domestically made cars. Most people who buy foreign cars don't realize this or even think about it until it comes time to get their vehicle repaired. Then they get hit with the bill and their eyes pop out of their head. For example, an oil filer for a 2005 Buick Century is about $2.98. The same oil filter for a Honda CRV is $3.98. It's basically the same filter for the Honda but it costs $1.00 more. That comes out to a 33% markup on a relatively cheap part. Imagine that same 33% markup on a part that costs $60 for the Buick. You'd be paying about $80 for the same part for the Honda.

The best way to get the best price for auto parts is to shop around. Look on the Internet. Go to auto parts auctions. Go to junk yards, though you don't want a used part for something critical like an engine. Some things like door handles and non functional items like those are fine. Most likely they won't go bad for a while. But for items that keep your car running, if you can afford it, it is best to get new.

Auto parts is big business. Just don't get caught up in the money pit it can land you in.

Finding Car Parts

Whether you are a backyard mechanic looking for inexpensive car parts to fill your customers' orders, or you own a body shop, or even a chain of body shops, you need to find car parts. However, car parts can be very expensive and can really bring down your profit margin. Especially, as a backyard mechanic, if you are fixing cars for family and friends with a pre-set expectation of a price range, expensive car parts can steal the few dollars you might expect to make for your trouble.

EBay can help you find inexpensive car parts. Using eBay, or some other online auction, you will likely be able to find most of the parts you're looking for at a reasonable cost. And it's a lot of fun. Here's how it works:

You'll need to sign up with eBay and with Paypal, since many people who post on eBay require payment through Paypal. It doesn't cost anything to sign up with either one of these.

Go onto eBay and search for the parts you're looking for. You might be able to find them on the main site at eBay.com (or eBay.ca if you live in Canada) or you can go directly to eBay motors, which is an automotive-specific sister site to eBay.

You can browse by the make and model of vehicle, and you may even find an entire vehicle that you can use for parts if need be.

Once you have found the kind of vehicle parts you're looking for, you'll want to make sure that you are purchasing the auto parts from a reputable seller. You can do this by looking at their feedback, which eBay posts from previous buyers. You'll also want to make sure that they ship to your area. For example, if you are buying auto parts from the US, but you live in Canada, you'll need to make sure that they ship to Canada.

Once you are satisfied that you are purchasing from a reputable buyer and that they will deliver the parts to you, you can place a bid by clicking on the "bid" button.

Part of the fun of purchasing on eBay is to watch the auction draw to a close. If someone bids higher than you, you will need to re-bid on it again if you want another chance to own it.

When the auction closes and you find that you have won, you will need to make arrangements with the seller for payment and shipping. Payment is easy with Paypal, all you need is the seller's e-mail address. Once your payment has been processed, the seller will send you the car part you bought.

The main advantage of using eBay is that it is a fun way to get parts affordably. The main disadvantage is the time factor: For example, you could bid on a part and lose it moments before the auction closes. Still, for the amount of money you could save, this might be a worthwhile option.

You get a lot for what you pay for and there are plenty of add-on options. The Chevy HHR accessories included in the LS are a 149-horse power ECOTEC engine, remote keyless entry, power locks and doors, AM/FM/CD stereo system, and remote vehicle starter system available when you purchase the automatic transmission instead of standard. Some notable auto parts and accessory options are OnStar Navigation, four wheel antilock braking system, side impact air bags, MP3 player, and XM satellite radio.

The next step up from the LS is 1LT. This model sports the same standard HHR accessories as the lesser-priced LS model, but includes sixteen-inch custom-spoke painted silver metallic wheels, an eight-way power driver's seat, thirty-six AM/FM radio presets, and MP3 player. The 1LT also has the same accessory options as the LS but with the addition of some wonderful features such as fog lamps, rear spoiler, sunroof, leather seats and steering wheel and a larger ECOTEC engine. The Chevy HHR 1LT is a more luxurious ride with more power and comfort than the LS.

The Panel LT is the next evolution in the HHR series. This model is very similar to the 1LT, with the obvious exception that there are no side windows behind the driver and passenger seats. The duty of this kind of vehicle is mostly for cargo, and the standard Chevy HHR accessory options are geared towards that job. Among the standards included are 175 horsepower ECOTEC engine, seventeen-inch painted aluminum wheels, gas-charged shocks and suspension, storage compartments in the rear floor, and rear power outlet. Optional auto parts and accessories for the Panel LT are leather interior, sunroof, and electronic traction control to stabilize the vehicle.

Next, we have the top of the line model: the Chevy HHR 2LT. While most of the standard auto parts and accessories on the other models are included on the 2LT, there are a few HHR accessories exclusive to the 2LT alone. The 2LT comes with four-wheel ABS brakes and an eight position adjustable driver's seat. For the ultimate in listening pleasure, the 2LT is equipped with a seven-speaker Pioneer sound system. Another addition is a rear view mirror that automatically dims for daytime driving.

The final model of the Chevy HHR series is the 2LT Special Edition. This vehicle includes all the options of the 2LT but with curb appeal added to the mix. The standard auto parts and accessories include seventeen-inch black chrome wheels, black chrome exterior package, fog and head lamps with smoked lenses, black roof side rails, leather steering wheel, and exterior colour-keyed running boards and accent stripe.

From the five different models available, you will be sure to find the Chevy HHR with the auto parts and accessories you are looking for, and you'll have a car that rises above the rest.

Discount Aftermarket Auto Parts Online - The Better Option

In many cases, people who are quite used to buying items and products from commercial complexes, traditional stores, and dealers strictly operating from brick-and-mortar shops will undoubtedly continue to buy from these establishments virtually all the time. They have gotten used to it, regardless of the circumstances of actually buying and getting the item or product itself. Since it is what they have gotten used to, most, if not all, inconveniences that arise in the process of buying from these stores do tend to get overlooked, since this is the only place where they can buy their needed items and parts. Had these people actually looked into and given some thought into buying auto parts online, then maybe their entire perspective on the matter would change overnight.

There are definite and concrete reasons why purchasing auto parts online is better than going all the way to the local car auto part dealer, and then discovering you went all the way for nothing, mainly because they had already run out of stocks of the auto part you needed. Here are just a few of those reasons:

Convenience of the internet - The internet is that it lets you purchase virtually anything, clothes, jewelry, food, basic supplies, even discount aftermarket auto parts online. Buying from an online auto part dealer is definitely far better than having to go to the junk shop or surplus shop and searching for the needed parts yourself. What could be better than actually being able to buy without having to leave the comfort of your home?

Get the most in the way of options - Buying auto parts online offers the buyer an unlimited number of options of online shops to buy the parts from. This eliminates the issue of distance. These online auto part distributors and dealers can readily be found in the directories available online, just use the keyword: auto parts online when doing your search.

Eliminate those pesky sales people - Persistent and nagging sales people are among the worst to be found in brick-and-mortar stores, trying to push their products right into your face just so you would buy from them just to get them to stop pestering you. Not being in the store means not being bugged by these people, which is a far better scenario offered by buying auto parts online.

Best deals and best prices - Online shops will also throw in several bonuses to whatever purchase you may be making from them, since this gives them an edge over the competition. Since the only thing that spreads faster than gossip are the testimonies of satisfied customers of good repute, potential buyers are sure to find numerous recommendations and positive reviews of the auto parts online stores everywhere, although it all boils down to whatever online dealer appears to be the most trustworthy of the lot.

Car Fuel Cell - Let's Do Our Part For Our Planet

Car fuel cell is something that is indeed made popular all around the world. The reason behind this is the fact that it is very efficient. How it works is by combining hydrogen and oxygen together and in the process producing electricity. This is what is used by your vehicle to run forward. This is not something new, because since many decades, liquid hydrogen is what is used to propel space ships into its orbit. Car fuel cell also uses the Hydrogen element. So you can take this as a reliable and most credible opportunity provided to you to do your part for a safe earth.

If you look at car fuel cell efficiency you will be surprised at how good it is. There are several arenas where it is popular and the most obvious one is related to the reduction of pollution. When compared to an engine that used gasoline as fuel this is something that will give the best services to you and to the atmosphere by almost keeping the pollution nil.

Car fuel cell is also very popular because of the energy efficiency that it provides. If the cell that you are using is provided with high quality pure hydrogen, then it reaches an efficiency of almost eight percent. This in fact means that eighty percent of the hydrogen fuel is converted to electrical energy that is usable.

If you compare these statistics with the gasoline or battery engines, you will see that there is very little efficiency. All the heat that is produced is wasted when it is thrown out as the exhaust or even when it is passed onto the radiator. The efficiency produced is just about twenty percent. The best way you can actually boost the performance of your vehicle is to use natural methods to power your engine. You also need to keep in mind that this will also reduce the maintenance that you have to do on the car is reduced a lot.

First, it's always a good idea to look for ones with excellent reputations in the community. For many families on a budget, they simply can't afford to get taken to the cleaner by a disreputable car dealer. So ask the people you know about their car buying experiences; friends and family members can prove to be an valuable source of information when it comes to choosing an excellent car dealership. You can also utilize the resources available online, through websites that provide reviews of businesses. By talking with others, you know which dealers will be honest with you about the conditions of their cars, and which ones won't.

It's also a good idea to look for dealers who are willing to contact you when new cars become available that will work for the needs of your family. You can use websites that have inventories of multiple dealers, but it's also nice to have someone on the inside who is willing to call you as soon as something comes available. And of course, an added bonus is being able to work with dealer who have children also, as they will be better able to understand what you are looking for and your unique needs as a parent.

Of course, this is all good advice for anyone looking to find a car dealer, no matter if they are a parent or not. Because after all, who doesn't like saving money? But it is a little more vital to parents, especially ones who are on budgets, who simply need excellent professionals who know their circumstances and will work hard for them both before and after the sale. By choosing wisely and trusting the opinions of those you know, you'll be able to find just the right car dealers to take care of you, now and in the future.

Racing Auto Parts and Your Car

When you are looking at a race car, you may not think about what is under the hood. You should because these auto parts are what make it go fast and win the race.

There are many things that you should think about when you are looking for the parts for your race car. You have to think about the quality as well as the way that you will get the parts to go with you when you are going to the races.

Getting your parts are not so hard. You really just need to have a few places in your head that will give you these places and that will help you with your parts needs. The first place that you will need to look for auto parts is at the auto parts stores. This is because they will have the basics that you will need for a good price. If they don't have what you need then you can have it ordered from the warehouse and shipped to the store that you are dealing with.

You can also look on the Internet because of the presence of auto parts that are made for performance and speed. These places usually have competitive pricing but you may not like the shipping rates that are with these online auto parts stores. This is the downside to ordering on the Internet as well as any other time that you may end up ordering your auto parts for your race car.

Once you get your auto parts, you will have to have a way to take them with you to the race that you may be going to. This can be an easy task if you are aware of what you are going to need. The best thing is to have a trailer outfitted with places to put your tools as well as a tool box for them.

Once you have got your race car and all the auto parts that you are going to need, you just have to race and hope that you can win at it. If you have tuned your car right and have gotten the auto parts that you need, you should be well equipped to win the race ahead of you. You may have to take a little time and check your car's auto parts before you start the race so make sure that you are ready.

Car Audio - Various Parts and Their Importance

Car audio system is an important item in a car. Car owners or purchasers prefer to have the best audio in their car. It is available in great ranges. This system is consisted of many other parts including amplifiers, head unit, input device and speakers. All these parts need to work in harmony so that system may also work in a best possible way. However, these parts are inter related as well as dependent and cannot work individually.

Head unit is considered as the central part in this system. It controls several other functions like volume, tuning, equalizer and bass. This unit works as central processing unit does in a computer. Various types and kinds of head units are present in this regard that may allow a CD or a radio to work. Some more advance devices are also available in the market that can run various CDs at a time. Some audio systems also contain a CD changer that allows other CD to work without taking it out of the system.

Speakers are another essential item in an audio system. It is a very important part that has significant function. With the help of it you can hear what ever you wish to play. Many styles of speakers are available in the market with specific advantages & disadvantages.

Next vital part of an audio system is amplifier. The main function of this part is to enhance the signals so that they may be audible. There are various models of amplifier also available in the market.

When you go to a market to purchase a car audio system, remember you may find items of the most basic style up to high quality system. You can easily get stylish and trendy models as well. Basic systems are mostly not that much expensive. Always carefully consider your requirement while purchasing an audio system. For example it may happen that tape recorder is not required and you wish to have a CD player, so prefer a good quality system that may run CDs. On the other hand it's not wise to purchase a combination of CD player and tape that may be cheap.

The Heart Of Car Parts

When a mechanic delivers the terrible news that the 'engine's gone' or 'completely seized' most people would imagine that they have seen the death of their car even though the rest of the car might be perfect. When you consider that driving for any distance without noticing that the oil light has been on - or simply ignoring it - can lead to that drastic diagnosis then car demise isn't so far away.

Although the engine is the very heart of the car many ordinary drivers don't realise that replacing an entire engine isn't quite as tricky as human surgery.
By using used car parts finders perfectly good reconditioned engines can be found for most makes of car wherever you live. By using an internet search site that links to yards up and down the country you may have a reasonably priced cure on hand with breaker yards competing to give you the best prices on all their used car parts.

Many cars that make their way to breaker's yards have been involved in heavy accidents - which may have damaged body work and alignment but may not have touched the engine at all.

Depending on the car make and model, with the right tools, equipment and know-how fitting an entire engine can be a far more straight forward task than many seemingly lesser car parts. Taking the engine apart to rebuild it will certainly be more time consuming even if that is an option.

Because of the robust nature and precision build of most modern engines they are often unaffected by the damage that goes on around them destroying other less robust car parts. The age and condition of the second-hand engine can be assessed before it is bought.

Once an engine has been replaced and run-in there is no reason why the car shouldn't continue to give years of reliable service. In some cases if an older engine has been changed the reconditioned engine may be better than the previous one.

Car dismantlers see an array of engines all the time and by utilising a specialised internet search site for used car parts you can get access to a huge number of second hand and reconditioned engines.

The loss of an engine does not have to mean the death of the car and may even mark the start of a new and more efficient chapter for it if the old engine was the cause of the problems. The replacement engine from a car dismantler may have be the new heart that the car needed.

Where to Find High Performance Corvette Parts

The Corvette is the quintessential American sports car and many auto enthusiasts search far and wide for classic C1 generation Sting Rays, C3 coupes and convertibles and contemporary C6 ZR-1's. Once you've found the car of your dreams and arranged payment for it the real work begins as you will need many high performance genuine Chevy Corvette parts to keep any make or model of Corvette in showroom shape.

Finding parts for select models of Corvette can prove to be daunting since many earlier generations are no longer in production and consequently the parts that were used to make each model are no longer being manufactured either. The online auto parts aftermarket is your best bet for finding high quality Corvette parts including brakes, wheels, seat covers, air filters and more.

The Chevy Corvette is a precisely engineered automobile that requires the right parts to make the car perform at an optimum level. Unlike Nissan Sentra's or Honda Civic's that can be repaired with generic auto parts and even scrap parts found in a junk yard Corvettes need genuine Corvette parts in order to run smoothly. You can perform repairs and add accessories with non-genuine parts but the results will vary and rarely will the performance be of the quality one expects from a Corvette.

A problem many people have when looking for genuine Corvette parts including brakes, wheels, tires and engine parts is not many auto superstores or garages carry these parts in stock. Corvettes aren't your typical automobile and often times a Corvette owner will have to order parts from a variety of vendors to outfit any make or model of Chevy Corvette.

Luckily the Corvette following is a large one and several high quality aftermarket parts suppliers can be found online where you can match your model Corvette to the exact part you are looking for. From brake pads and brake rotors, transmission coolers and oil coolers to custom car covers and exhaust systems the web is your best source for finding rare and hard to find genuine Corvette parts.

Shopping for parts online is much easier than trying to find rare parts in an auto parts store or even a mechanics shop. Once you have the make and model you can quickly find the specific part number and then browse the selections of any online aftermarket parts supplier for the right match. Better still you can comparison shop to see if you can find the same part for a cheaper price depending on the vendor and how long it will take them to ship the part.

As with any premium sports car the Chevy Corvette is both a high performance automobile and a collector's item that many enthusiasts like to show off at car shows and keep in pristine condition in a garage or carport. There are literally hundreds of custom Corvette parts and accessories that can keep any make or model of Chevy Corvette looking and running great and all you have to do is search online for a high quality genuine Corvette parts supplier to track down the exact part you're looking for.

Recycled Car Parts Replacements

If you are the mechanic type, then that is just fabulous. This is great, because you know a lot when it comes to installing and repairing car parts. The most frustrating part of it all is when you are busy on a vehicle and you find that there are a few parts that need replacing. In the end, this can cost you, and if you are doing it for a customer, cost them plenty of money. There are solutions to many problems and there are certainly ways you can slash the prices of car parts by deciding to use recycled parts.

Recyclers offer consumers great deals when they are looking for used car parts. The thing is, people might think that this is a bad idea, but the truth is there are so many recyclers around, it is amazing. The other great thing about these recyclers is that their prices are hard to beat. You will always find one beating the other, so look around. The reason for this is that insurance companies save lots of money when they pass wrecked vehicles down to junk yards.

Buying recycled parts is good, because when these parts are purchased, the pollution from manufacturing new parts is prevented. Manufactures use a lot of oil when making new parts and this is saved when recycling. Reusing the raw materials can be a benefit to the environment, and when you go out and find your recycled vehicle part, there are many places that you can go to in order to get them. Statistics have shown that there are over 4 million vehicles recycled each year in the United States, and that makes tons of vehicle parts available to you.

Recycling parts can save a lot of space when it comes to landfilling, and why should something that can be used again be thrown away? That is money being thrown away. Also, the other reason why you should consider used car parts is that you are purchasing quality parts that were manufactured by their original manufacturer. Recyclers have the skill when it comes to determining damaged parts and those that can be reused.

It is true: used parts can save plenty of money, and it is clear that this is by far the cheapest alternative available to you. The one question many people has it this: are we getting the same quality? That is a good question. Today, many recyclers supply warranties on parts. This means that you will not be buying a potato. Another advantage is that recyclers are much faster when it comes to a specific part you are looking for compared to many dealers. Their businesses run on a network and this allows them to communicate with other recyclers. If a recycler does not have the part you are looking for, there is a great chance that they will find it immediately.

Recycled car parts are better buys than brand new car parts for replacement. For one, they are much cheaper and for another, you know that you're doing your share of keeping pollution down.

Drift Car on a Budget - Part 1, Choosing Your Car

So you're interested in drifting and want to start competing. Well before you can begin to compete you need to have a car that can compete.

This can be a problem. If you where anything like me when I started out, you don't have the cash to build a Formula D level slide machine. So what do you do? Well, do what I did; build a drift car on a budget!

The first step is finding a good platform to start with. This can be a challenge with all the different cars that are used in the drifting world. But I have a few solid rules that you can follow that will help make your decision a lot easier.

First, you will want something driftable. By saying driftable, I'm talking about how it needs to have the essential characteristics of a drift car. You will NEED to find a car that has rear wheel drive (RWD), and a manual transmission. Don't go out and find something with a automatic transmission or for some reason front wheel drive (FWD) and say "I can just do a tranny swap" or "I can do a RWD conversion". DON'T! This is NOT WORTH THE EFFORT, PERIOD! The purpose is to build a drift car for as cheap as possible and as quick as possible so that you can be on the track drifting as soon as possible.

Second, you want it to be cheap. I set a budget of $1000. I know plenty of people that found a car for less but they got lucky. I set my budget of $1000 for a running driving car that I could build into something that would be competitive. Along with the price of the car being cheap, you want parts to be cheap. You want a vehicle that has a strong aftermarket following and an abundance of spare parts that are easy to find and cheap.

And third, you will want a vehicle you aren't in love with. In the world of drifting, you will make mistakes, you will have accidents, and you will crash. Therefore you want something that you will be willing to take to the edge and past in order to improve your skills. Too many times I've seen people that are afraid to push themselves and there car because they're afraid of crashing. To be able to learn and improve you can't be thinking about crashing, you need to be thinking about how you can better your technique. You can't be afraid of crashing, it's inevitable so deal with it.

I chose a 1992 Nissan 240sx for several reasons. They're cheap, they have a huge aftermarket following, parts from other Nissans are bolt-on upgrades, and the 2.4L DOHC (KA24DE) engine is tough and loaded with torque.

Cars I would recommend are the Nissan 240sx S13 and S14, Mazda Miata MX-5 (any year), Toyota Supra (I recommend the older body style of the early 90s), Mazda Rx7, and the Toyota Cressida. Or if your into domestics you can go with the Ford Mustang, or any other cheap abundant RWD car.

Quality VW Parts: OEM and Aftermarket - The Difference

Your Volkswagen, when it was built, came with certain parts that met VW's stringent requirements. When it comes time to replacing these parts, you need to equip your VW with only those parts that meet or exceed manufacturer requirements. Generally, you have two choices: OEM parts or aftermarket parts. There is a difference between the two, let's take a look at exactly what they are.

Your New Beetle is your prized possession. Ever since VW released the revised Beetle in 1997, you have owned one and have kept it maintained yourself. Could it be that you are missing out on something? Are you paying too much for parts? Are there other parts you can use on your New Beetle that are even better than what came with your car? The answer to all three of these questions is, Yes!

OEM parts are also known as original equipment manufacturer parts. These parts are the same parts that were placed on your vehicle when it was built. For example, if your car came with Bilstein shocks, then your replacement VW parts must be Bilstein shocks. Aftermarket parts are those parts developed for your car after the car was released for sale [brought to the market]. In the case of shocks, Monroe or some other manufacturer may have created a line of shocks just for your car. As long as those replacement shocks meet or exceed stringent OEM specifications you are okay. If they don't, then stay away from them.

So, how can you know which
Volkswagen parts are right for your car? That's easy. Your automobile manual will tell you. In addition, a good auto supply store can give you that information. Car Parts Stuff, for example, lists all of their inventory right online so that you are able to compare parts and prices by make and model. Whatever parts are listed with your make, model, and model year, those are the parts that are right for your car.

As mentioned earlier, you may be paying too much for your parts if you purchase them through a retail establishment, particularly one that uses a supplier. A wholesaler, on the other hand, will purchase OEM or better parts directly from the manufacturer. This assures you of two things:

1. The parts purchased are authentic. Too many counterfeit parts get passed by as authentic when in reality they are counterfeit. Buy direct from wholesalers to make certain.

2. You will pay less for parts purchased through a wholesaler as no third party vendors will get a cut in the action.

Volkswagen parts that meet or exceed tough original equipment manufacturer specifications are all that you will ever need for your car. Be careful where you go to purchase replacement parts and shop around to ensure that you obtain the lowest prices for the best parts.

Car Parts That Have a Positive, Yet Sometimes Unrealized Environmental Impact

In world increasingly focused on the health of our environment, automobiles have become a major focus of green initiatives as they are seen as a major source of many of our current global pollution concerns. Beyond owning a hybrid vehicle, there are certain steps drivers can take to ensure that their vehicle, regardless of make or age is reducing its impact on the environment. These steps that reduce the vehicle's impact on the environment involve the following: window tinting, air conditioning and management of the vehicle's tires.

Auto window tinting can have a very large impact on the amount of energy used by the vehicle and thus the amount of emissions released by the vehicle. It is known that when a vehicle has tinted windows, it shields UV rays from passengers and reduces the overall heat absorption of the vehicle and thus reduces the amount of air conditioning needed within the vehicle. This reduction of the use of air conditioning within the vehicle reduces the amount of stress on the engine itself and thus has a positive impact in decreasing the amount of fuel used by the vehicle. This decrease in fuel reduces the vehicles impact on the environment, all because the driver invested in window tinting.

Coming back to air conditioning within the vehicle, it is important to note that this car feature can be managed to the point where it has a positive impact in reducing the vehicle's burden on the environment. For instance, it is obvious that based on what was said above, using air conditioning within the vehicle puts more stress on the engine, which in turn consumes more fuel. This information leads to the simple inference that not using automotive air conditioning will greatly reduce the impact of the vehicle on the environment. The natural solution is to roll down the windows of the vehicle and let the natural air blow through the automobile, cooling the passengers inside without burdening the engine. However, it is very important to note that when travelling with the windows of the vehicle rolled down, after the vehicle reaches a certain speed and then travels above it, the engine of the vehicle is in fact more stressed than when the vehicle is travelling with the windows rolled up. This is due in large part to the reduced aerodynamics of the automobile when it has its windows down and the increased friction of the air around the vehicle as the driver accelerates to their desired speed. In general, driving with the windows down on the highway reduces the energy efficiency of the vehicle's engine.

A final area where a driver can manage their vehicle's impact on the environment is in the management of their tire pressure. It may be very obvious that a vehicle's tires have a direct impact on the fuel efficiency of the automobile. For instance, tires that are inflated bellow their optimum fill level increases the effort with which the engine needs to work to move the vehicle and thus decreases the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. Simply maintaining consistent tire pressure at the optimum fill level will ensure your tires are not increasing your vehicle's impact on the environment.

An Overview of the Most Common Auto Parts Failures

Your car's health and longevity are heavily dependent on the maintenance you provide through the years. Fortunately, most types of maintenance are simple and require very little time. For example, you'll need to change the oil every 5,000 miles (or longer, depending on your owner's manual). You'll need to periodically replace the air and fuel filters. You'll also need to check the fluid levels and tire pressure on a regular basis. If you're diligent about doing these things, you can keep your vehicle operating smoothly for many years.

Unfortunately, old age eventually comes regardless of what you do to hold it at bay. Auto parts fail and will need to be replaced. Below, I'll give you a list of the components you can expect to replace down the road.

The Fuel Pump

Your fuel pump is responsible for delivering gasoline to your fuel injection system. If it fails, your car's engine (or specifically, the combustion chambers) will not receive the gas required for the combustion process. If you're driving a domestic vehicle, you can expect to replace the pump at approximately 50,000 miles. If you own a Toyota or Honda, you may never need to replace it.

The bad news is that this component is usually installed within the gas tank. As a result, it takes time to replace. While the pump itself might cost $200, the labor might cost twice as much.

The Transmission

A transmission failure is expensive. While small problems, such as leaks, can be fixed easily and inexpensively if they're identified early, a failure usually means replacing the entire assembly. This is because a lot of transmission shops are unwilling to perform a complete overhaul due to the time involved.

Transmissions that are installed within most late model vehicles can last past 100,000 miles. Keep in mind that is merely a guideline; some will fail much sooner. The cost to replace the assembly can exceed $2,500, including parts and labor.

The Braking System

The more aggressively you drive, the sooner you'll need to have your brakes repaired. Most brake jobs focus solely on the pads. The pads wear down and need to be replaced before they begin grinding against the rotors. When that happens, you'll need to have the rotors machined.

The brake pads on light vehicles should only need to be replaced every 50,000 miles or more. Heavy SUVs, on the other hand, might need to have them replaced at 35,000 miles. The pads usually cost less than $80 and can be installed at home. However, if the rotors need to be machined, you'll need the tools and expertise of a mechanic. Expect to pay up to $500 (and maybe more).

The Battery

Car batteries typically last between three and six years. While their durability depends largely on the brand you purchase, the climate in which you live can also play a role. Warm temperatures, such as the heat you might experience in Arizona, can dramatically shorten a battery's life - often to three years.

Fortunately, batteries are inexpensive (usually less than $100) and can be easily replaced without the help of a mechanic.

There are many other components and systems that suffer wear and tear, and eventually need to be repaired or replaced. For example, your car's engine should operate smoothly for over 100,000 miles, but that will depend on your driving habits and diligence in changing the oil. Your catalytic converter should last over 150,000 miles, but a rich fuel blend in the engine can shorten its life.

Consider your vehicle an investment. You'll need to replace parts as they fail. The key is to stay on top of regular maintenance items (i.e. check fluid levels, change the oil, replace filters, etc.) and have problems fixed quickly. By doing so, you'll prevent small problems from turning into large repair bills.

Aftermarket Auto Parts Vs Used OEM Auto Parts Vs Brand New Discounted Parts

Alright! The worst thing has happened to your car and that worn out / damaged part needs a replacement. What is the first thing that comes to your mind?

I am sure it would be, "how do I get a replacement part that fulfills the need at the lowest possible price?" And believe me; most sensible people would think the same way.

Let's face it; nobody likes to spend big bucks on car repairs and part replacements. In fact, if given a choice, nobody would even want to be in a situation where his/her car needs a repair or a replacement part.

This is basic human nature and we all exhibit it. As far as I am concerned, I would rather spend extra money on a fancy car stereo than go for a costly replacement auto part. I would any day prefer the cheapest possible repair or part replacement that does the job and so would you unless you are a celebrity and money sticks to you like a shadow.

So what are the options you can consider if your vehicle needs a replacement part?

In the current market scenario, we have 3 major options namely:

Aftermarket Parts
Used OEM Parts
Brand New Discounted Parts

Let's discuss the pros and cons of each so that we can make a decision.

Aftermarket Parts for a vehicle may be defined as auto parts made by a manufacturer other than the original vehicle manufacturer.

But that is not necessarily the correct definition as most vehicle manufacturers do not make all the parts themselves. They may ask a different company to manufacture a certain auto part for them. In that case, the first definition would not hold true.

I believe the following example would make the concept clear.

If you are fitting an Air Filter in your ABC car and that Air Filter is not manufactured, not considered a standard fitment (stock option) and not recommended by the ABC Company, it qualifies as an aftermarket part as far as ABC Company is concerned. In that case, all warranty from ABC Company for your ABC car is void.

That is not the only consequence of fitting aftermarket parts in your vehicle. These parts are not tested for compatibility with all makes and models of cars. As a result, an aftermarket part may not function properly in your car leading to unforeseen problems. For example, an aftermarket Air Filter can harm you car engine if it is not compatible with your car model resulting in low engine-efficiency or perhaps total engine damage.

Aftermarket parts don't necessarily confirm to laws and regulations for quality and performance. For Example, aftermarket headlights may not confirm to the local regulations in your state or perhaps your aftermarket engine does not meet the emission standards in your state. It is imperative that you ascertain correct details and features of an aftermarket part before you purchase it.

Depending on factors like quality and brand-name, an aftermarket part can cost less, equal or more than a brand new OEM part.

A good quality aftermarket part manufactured by a company specializing in a particular domain qualifies as a performance enhancing auto part and usually costs more than what a brand new normal OEM part would. Unless you are willing to shell out money on car customization, you don't need to tread that path.

One truth about aftermarket parts holds good even today; "use it at your own peril."

Used OEM auto parts for a vehicle are manufactured by the same manufacturer that made the vehicle. The only factor being, these parts are not brand new. They have been used before, probably in another vehicle of the same make and somehow found their way to a scrap-yard or salvage-yard.

In this case, a fact that one should consider before purchasing a used auto part is that used parts from a certain ABC car most probably will fit only ABC cars of the same model and year as per company standards. This is because manufacturers might introduce slight changes or enhancements in auto part designs and specifications every year for any particular model.

Since all OEM auto parts from a particular car manufacturer are of the same quality and tested for optimum performance by the manufacturer, you don't end up making any compromises on this front. Remember, this is not the case with aftermarket parts.

Used auto parts could be your best option in terms of cost-effectiveness and quality provided you select the correct auto part online and buy it from a recognized seller only. The advantage of buying from established sellers is that you get original quality tested parts at low prices and usually with no shipping charges.

The only worrying factor about used auto parts may be about their history. The part could be salvaged from a car that got destroyed in an accident or perhaps from a car that was scrapped after serving a lifetime. Then there are also some used auto parts available that were used by the original manufacturer for testing purposes.

Whatever be the history of the part, you can get a confirmation from the seller over the phone before buying. Major used auto-part dealers exercise quality control by maintaining a log about the condition and history of a particular auto part so that the customer knows about the exact age and origin of the part he/she is buying.

Moreover, vehicle's manufacturer warranty does not get nullified if you install a used OEM part in your vehicle.

Used auto parts are the most cost effective out of all the three options since they cost just about one-third the price of brand new OEM auto parts.

Brand New Discounted Auto Parts probably don't need any description. These are brand new auto parts sold at discount prices. Definitely a great option but these are not available everyday and at every store. In fact, they are available occasionally and at the sole discretion of the dealer. If you are lucky enough, you might find the part you need on discount but as is the case usually, the parts that are sold at a discount are the ones that have the least demand. Hence, if you desperately need a brand new replacement part for your car, you might have to wait till it is available at discount prices.

To conclude, you can choose any of these options depending on your need and suitability but please remember that in the case of repairs and part replacements, you should take a step only after weighing the pros and cons of each available option.

Happy Motoring!

eBay and Car Stereo Parts

Surprisingly, one of the very best places to start looking for your brand new car stereo system is on eBay. You can find some amazing deals on both new and used stereo parts. In addition, you can find a significant amount of manufacturers that may not be available in your area especially if you live in a more rural area. eBay also allows you to by one part of a car stereo system at a time so you do not break the bank by purchasing a $3000 car stereo system all at once.

Why choose eBay over your local car parts dealer? Even after shipping, you can almost always find a better deal from a wholesaler on eBay then you can at a local parts dealer. The markup on speakers when you go to a retail store is outrageous. In general the only time that you can find better prices is during a liquidation or going out of business sale. At a minimum, go lookup fair market value prices on eBay before you go to your local retailer.

Are there any problems with eBay? Unfortunately, there are. Even though most eBay sellers have good intentions, you do not have the opportunity to physically examine the product before it shows up on your doorstep. This can cause a massive amount of time wasted trying to get your money back and shipping the item back to the seller. In addition if you have questions, you will not be able to ask the stores associate in person. This can be a problem if you do not know about the product you are buying. But keep in mind that you can e-mail the seller on eBay to get all your questions answered before you buy your new car stereo parts. One final problem with eBay is that you do not get to listen to the sound system before you buy. This means that you may not like that 12" sub-woofer that you are buying. Maybe it is just too loud and intense for your tiny little car. However, you can always go to your local retailer and pick out the speaker system that you want in the store and then go back to eBay to find the best deal.

If you are looking for a good deal, then try shopping online. You should also try other online retailers like Amazon to find out if there are retailers out there offering even better prices. However, with eBay you can see how many items the retailer sold and what the buyers actually thought about the seller. If you go to some random website, there is a small chance that they could be trying to scam you which makes eBay much safer in many cases.

The Auto Writer, Part I

DaimlerChrysler Nets $3.3 Billion Profit

DaimlerChrysler has reported a profit of $3.3 billion for 2005 based on the strength of its Chrysler Group and commercial truck divisions. The company's Mercedes division actually lost money in 2005 as it undergoes an extensive overhaul of its operations.

Competing automakers GM lost $8.6 billion while the Ford Motor Company turned a $2 billion profit on the strength of strong profits outside of the North American market.

Ford vs. Chevy: The Winner

Ford and Chevrolet are locked in an annual battle for sales leadership in the U.S. Despite the insurgency of foreign brands, Ford and Chevrolet continue to rule the roost.

Winning the battle of yearly sales is something neither automaker takes lightly. For years, Chevrolet was the clear winner before Ford rallied and started to beat out Chevy in the 1980s. According to Automotive News, the winner for 2005 is Chevrolet by just over 17,000 units. The totals include cars and light duty trucks, however if medium and heavy duty trucks are included, then the winner is Ford by approximately 5,000 units.

Kia's European Surge

Credit Kia with setting records. In sales, that is. According to Motoring Life, Kia's sales in the Western European market rose nearly 40% in 2005. For the third consecutive year, Kia registered the biggest gains in year to year sales in the market which covers 18 nations.

Kia's growth has stemmed from intense marketing efforts and the popularity of its Rio compact car and Sportage compact SUV. Although overall market share is very small at 1.6%, the trend for further growth is in place as the Korean automaker introduces European versions of its Optima sedan, Sedona minivan, and other models. Kia will be opening a new plant in Slovakia later this year to handle the increased demand for its vehicles.

Jeep Supplier Jobs Opening Up

Although GM and Ford are shedding jobs, one American automaker is holding steady. Jeep, a division of DaimlerChrysler, is experiencing robust demand for its Liberty and Wrangler vehicles as well as for the Dodge Nitro, a rebadged Liberty. Thus, as many as 1,000 supplier jobs paying in the neighborhood of $11-$13 per hour are springing up to supply the Toledo plant.

The Ohio News Network is reporting that as many as 200 laid off Jeep workers will be called back too as they provide third shift work to help build the Nitro.

G5 For Pontiac

Autoweek is reporting that Pontiac will soon get its own version of the Chevrolet Cobalt. Dubbed the G5, the car will fill a void that has been in the Pontiac line up ever since the Sunbird exited the scene a few years back. The G5 is expected to debut this fall as a 2007 model.

In addition to bringing in the G5, Pontiac is planning on getting rid of the Montana SV6 minivan, citing that the vehicle doesn't fit the division's branding.

Tips on Buying the Best Auto GPS Units, Part II

In Part I of this series, we discussed how much you can spend on auto GPS units, and how much you want to spend. In this part, we're going to discuss the manufacturers and what features you need to be on the look out for.

Buy the end of this article, you should know enough about auto GPS units to enter the marketplace with knowledge and confidence.

What manufacturer's product should I buy?

Since I just mentioned the top manufacturers in the United States, let me just say a few words about each of them.

Garmin has the broadest and deepest product line. I like their nuvi line quite a lot! They're sleek and really have a lot of features for such a small package.

Tom Tom has been fast catching up in the United States due to very aggressive pricing. If you want a more fully featured model than the One, 3rd Edition, then how about the GO 920T, which was listed by Consumer Reports recently as one of the best GPS's to buy. Right now, it will cost you a little over $400.

Magellan is sort of the granddaddy of the field. They were one of the first companies to enter the auto GPS market. I like their Maestro line the best for about the same reasons I like Garmin's nuvi line.

Also, Magellan has a great deal with AAA, where they have the Tour Book pre-programmed right in their device. I'm a AAA lover. So, for me that's a great selling feature.

Sure, there are other manufacturers of these devices other than Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan, but since these three control almost 90% of the U. S. market, I can't see any reason to buy anything else.

Now that we've talked about who makes auto GPS units, let's talk about what features you should be considering.

What do I want my new GPS to do--besides tell me how to get places?

In addition to showing you where you are and telling how to get to places, all GPS units also have touch screens, a database of pre-programmed destinations (called Points of Interest, or POI's), and pre-loaded maps, usually of at least the lower 48 United States.

Other features you might want are:

More maps
Actually saying street names (instead of just "Turn Here!")
Real-time weather and traffic alerts right on your device
Bluetooth, so you can make hands-free phone calls while driving
Multiple point routing, so you can enter more than one destination in for the same trip
Bigger screen (4.3-inches instead of 3.5-inches--measured along the diagonal)

You can get the extra maps, saying the street names, and the real-time weather and traffic alerts (with subscription) for only about $200! The Garmin nuvi 350 can do this just fine.

If you want Bluetooth, then you can get this and the wider screen for around $400. The multiple point routing will cost you another $50 to $100.

There are certainly more features, but these are the main ones. There's a lot of competition under $400 in the auto GPS marketplace. Above $400, it's mainly all Garmin. So, if you're willing to spend more, you really need to look at their nuvi 700's and their 800's.

Hopefully, this will help you wrap your mind around the market for auto GPS units a little better!

At first buying a GPS seems a little confusing and overwhelming. It's not really. There are just a few things you haven't thought about.

Use this article as a guide to help you better understand the marketplace.

What you need now is an informative website where you can browse and check current prices.
